Galaxy Camera allows user to choose modes and adjust settings through a touchscreen. Graphics look eye-catching and emulates a real lens, letting user identify impacts of parameters especially onto manual shooting. The manufacturer also installs a lot of effects such as vintage, black/white… into the system whereas Android devices have a bunch of supporting apps.

Simple interface

Simple interface

Capture interface is simple, with a touch button for quick video recording (on the left) right in capture mode. Meanwhile, a small frame for viewing captured images lies in the bottom and menu of parameters is in the right. However, as the screen is large and wide, in most cases, we had to use both hands for operation. It’s interesting that Galaxy Camera can use voice command to captures but it only supports sounds like: “capture” or “shoot”.

An impressive photo captured by Galaxy Camera

An impressive photo captured by Galaxy Camera

Samsung Galaxy Camera owns a BSI-CMOS sensor featuring 16.3MP resolution and seizing 6.17x4.55mm (1/2.3in). Although it is quite big, it can’t be on par with models in the same segment. This is understandable as the camera’s cost includes one for an Android-compatible hardware system which is pricey. 21x optical zoom is impressive, with 23-481mm focal range.

Our tests proved that the anti-shock system worked effectively. In some short focal distances, at 1/50 shutter speed, user was able to take action without shaking the screen (plus with no stand). Zoom engine worked quietly when changing zooming length.

With its 23mm wide lens, Galaxy Camera could perform macro shooting though the distance was not really impressive, 10cm (80cm in normal shooting). However, due to large aperture, macro effects were impressive, with smooth bokeh and nice detail.

Purple fringing was visible

Purple fringing was visible

Though, it’s a problem that purple fringing is visible in silhouette shooting and especially in image containing no cloud and branches hanging across the frame.

Colors were well displayed

Colors were well displayed.

Images captured by Galaxy Camera delivered nice and accurate colors but details were not much sharp, like from most mid-segment compacts, when zooming the image over 100%. This is not really worrying as images are not often used for large printing.

However, the model’s noise reduction is good, at ISO 3200. Despite that, from ISO and below, colors didn’t appear accurate.

Distortion in wide angle is unavoidable

Distortion in wide angle is unavoidable.

At the widest angle, 23mm, Galaxy Camera couldn’t avoid image distortion with close object. The phenomenon appeared in the area that was a little distant from the center (by 1/3 of width).

Imaged cropped at 100% (with size maintained) showed that detail was still good yet it was distant from some hi-end compacts pricing over $600.
