All of which is within the Samsung Series 7
CHRONOS
Chronos, which forms a part of the Samsung
Series 7 notebooks' naming convention, is the Greek personification of Time
(that is, to say, Time itself, only anthropomorphic and possibly huggable).
While we can't pinpoint how or why Samsung chose this as a name (it does sound
excessively cool, though), we can, however, say that the Samsung Series 7
manages Time -- in this case, boot time — much more efficiently than others. It
is also a good notebook.
But first, the design. The CHRONOS is
undeniably attractive; the sleekness, the silver finish, the minimalistic
approach, the subtle bends and two-colour motif all amalgamate to make it
classy and stylish. There's a sort of deliberation in aesthetics here that you
can't help but admire every inch of it, and it's solidly built as well. It's
also a little heavier than most. And thicker, comparably, but not the bulkiest
out there.
The same deliberation in aesthetics is also
carried into other things. The 14-inch screen, for one, manages a very crisp
1,600 x 900 resolution, which makes it great for multi-taskers, and it's barely
reflective. The backlit keyboard is attractive and types very smoothly and
responsively. It's not without its faults, though. We find the touchpad to be
rather annoying to use; left clicks sometimes registers as right clicks, and
because it's a seamless integration, sometimes clicking inadvertently moves the
pointer away. The palmrest is also rather uncomfortable -- it's imbalanced and
the edges cut into the palm.
The CHRONOS' Intel Core i5, 4GB RAM setup
might not wow the crowd, but the notebook's performance is expectedly good and
well capable of running work, multimedia, and non-too-graphics-intense gaming.
Battery life holds out well here, too; we managed a solid 5 hours in our
video-loop test. But best of all is its very impressive boot time, which gets
you started within 2-3 seconds of pressing the power button by utilising a
hybrid sleep mode. Statistically, this is about 10 times faster than the other
traditional notebooks, Ultrabooks aside.
