The last few months of 2013 saw the entry of four new phablets with display sizes of above 5.5-inch. All four come with the latest hardware and software technologies, but which one is worth shelling out your money for?

NOKIA Lumina 1520

The Lumia 1520 retains the familiar unibody polycarbonate design that Nokia has retained so well in its line-up of Lumia devices. What you see and feel is a sturdy and vibrant polycarbonate shell that is dressed in four colors (yellow, white, black and red). If you are planning to get the red model, do take note of its glossy and fingerprint/ smudge-prone texture. The other colors have a matte surface, which doesn’t feel and look as cheap.

A six-inch, 1080p full HD display with excellent outdoor readability and
redesigned start screen lets you make the most of the extra space

In terms of dimensions, the Lumia 1520 is the widest, second longest and second heaviest of the four phablets compared. As such, do not expect to hold it comfortably unless you have a huge pair of hands. The sharp corners may not be to everybody’s liking, but handling is generally acceptable.

As it comes with a 6-inch Full-HD display, the Lumia 1520 is the largest Windows Phone device you can get in the market. Its IPS display is really bright and sharp, and brings out the best of the Windows Phone interface. You can see more Live Tiles and the ability to resize them makes more sense on a larger display.

Tell a different story by reframing and recropping high-resolution photos.

The Lumia 1520 is the first handset to ship with the Nokia Lumia Black update, which delivers new features such as Glance Screen, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy support, and new camera algorithms. Two long overdue features finally debut on Windows Phone—screen rotation, and closing of apps via the “x” icon on the top right corner of the app tab in multitasking.

However, like HTC’s One Max, the Lumia 1520 lacks an interface that is optimized for larger displays. It doesn’t have specific features such as split- screen multitasking that LG and Samsung have developed.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 comes with all the exclusive features of Windows Phone 8,
like Live Tiles and People Hub. And they're all optimised for the big screen,
making your Windows Phone 8 experience even better.

Running under the hood is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.2GHz processor and 2GB RAM. This puts the Lumia 1520 on par with most Android flagship devices. One aspect that is superior is its imaging capabilities. The Lumia 1520 is equipped with a 20-megapixel PureView rear camera that takes really great photos. The only drawbacks of the camera are its slowness, both in focusing and capturing images.
