Lumia’s newest baby

With the launch of the Lumia 920 and 820 in India, Nokia is now trying to competing with the affordable budget smartphones that have been ruling the roost for quite some time now. So, we have now seen the launch of the Lumia 520 which is the replacement for the Lumia 510. Priced rather competitively at $180, this will certainly take on the budget smartphones segment head-on, with its Windows 8 goodness. But is it any good?

Build & design

At only 9.9mm thick, this is quite a slim smartphone and at only 124 gms is quite light-weight too. The structure is true to the Lumia family of smartphones and feels quite nice, though we will have to wait for a review unit to fully see if this phone feels like a plastic cheapo phone or not. Overall, from the pictures, we see a very well-built handset with a typically Nokia polycarbonate chassis. Another Nokia signature is the range of bright colors the phone will be available in; red, cyan, white, black and yellow are the options for potential buyers. These can be swapped around as well, but you will have to buy them all separately.

Hardware & software

The 4-inch IPS LCD screen has a resolution of 800x480, which isn't great but good enough to compete with the budget phones in this price bracket. On the plus side, the phone has a rather decent Qualcomm CPU which has two Krait cores clocked in at 1Ghz. Coupled with 512MB of RAM and Adreno 305 GPU, this is quite a tempting combination for the asking price. Not to forget an internal storage of 8GB and microSD card support up to 64GB. There's also a 5MP snapper, but no flash. Ouch! Wi-Fi gets boosted with dual-band support too, and only NFC missing, this is quite a sweet deal for a Windows 8 phone on a budget.

Early thoughts

Markets like India will surely be where Nokia will expect the Lumia 520 to do really well, and with a fairly impressive spec sheet it should. If Nokia play their cards right, they will be back in the smartphone domination game in a year or so, with the help of such products.
