First impressions

When you first see the phone, you are convinced that it is certainly one of the better looking smartphone's from Karbonn. The attractively designed box has a very clear aim, emphasize on its core strength i.e. the Snapdragon processor. What impressed me more was Karbonn had done something, which most brands should have done long ago. The phone came with a scratch guard applied to the phone and there is an extra scratch guard in the box too. The back cover snaps off easily, but one of the drawbacks we found was that the buttons are attached to the back panel. When the back panel is removed, it exposes the volume and lock keys, which makes it prone to damage that could be caused due to dust and water.

Review

SIM Cards slotted in, Micro SD card fixed and we were all set to test the phone. Starting with the basics, the calling function works like a charm and the sound quality was perfect on both ends. The 5 megapixel camera offers great performance in both daytime and during the night (thanks to the LED flash). Since this budget phone is equipped with a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor, we did not experience lag while we played games or ran several apps together. Connectivity over Bluetooh, Wi-Fi, etc is flawless too. The battery life of the phone is not too good. When accessing the web over Wi-Fi along with a gaming sessions, the battery drained swiftly. The phone's touchscreen gave us a hard time when we connected it to the charger. The audio quality (during music) is average.

We ran a few benchmark tests with the phone and the results were excellent. Upon screen test, we did not find any dead pixels, which is good. While testing its hardware performance, the results were good for an Android budget phone. What was rather surprising was that it offers performance slightly lower than the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and higher than the LG Optimus 2X.

Verdict

In the recent past we have reviewed several budget phones, and the Karbonn A9+ is certainly better than the other ones. Apart from the poor battery life, every other feature of the product lives up to its expectations. This is absolute value for money for those who are looking for a phone under the budget of $180. It works fine, has an Android 4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, a 5 megapixel camera, dual SIM capability, what more do you want?
