How do I send to multiple contacts in Opera?
Question
I have started to use the Opera web
browser. When using Opera Mail, I want to send the same email to various people
in the Contacts list. Is there a quick way of inserting the addresses into the
To field? When I do this in Thunderbird, which I am using at the moment, I
simply click the name, and while holding down the Control (Ctrl) button, I
click all the other names I wish to send to before clicking the ‘Add to To:’
button, at the bottom left of the screen.
Answer
The method is almost exactly the same in Opera,
but with one minor difference - you just have to click the Compose button (a
small pen) when you’ve selected the relevant contacts. Alternatively, use the
keyboard shortcut, Control and M. In either case a new Compose window will
open, with the selected contacts already in the To field.

How do I quickly stop a print job?
Question
Sometimes, instead of printing just one
page of a large document, I accidentally print the whole document. It takes
ages to visit the Windows 7 Control Panel to find the printer settings and
cancel printing, and in the meantime a large number of pages will have been
printed. Is there some way to put an icon on the Desktop that will allow me to
cancel printing immediately?
Answer
First, check whether your printer has its
own Cancel button. If it does, pressing and holding it down should cancel the
current print job and clear it from the Windows 7 print queue.
To
access printing jobs or cancel printing, put an icon on the Desktop.
Double-clicking the icon will open the print queue
This is by far the quickest and easiest
method of cancelling a print job. If no such button exists another option is to
access the print queue from the Notification Area. Just right-click the printer
icon there and choose Open All Active Printers.
Finally, yes - you can indeed put an icon
on the Desktop. Click start, to open the Devices and Printers Control Panel,
then drag and drop your printer’s icon to the Desktop. Double-clicking it will
immediately open the print queue.
How do I record to MiniDisc?
Question
I have just come across a problem that I’m
hoping you can help me with. I like my music and have quite a few CDs. What I
decide to listen to determines whether I play the CD through my PC or mini
hi-fi system. I have just been given a Minidisc player/recorder that I would
like to try out, but my mini hi-fi does not have any output sockets, other than
the standard 3.5mm headphone socket. Is it possible to use this headphone
socket to connect to the Minidisc player for recording to disc?
Answer
You didn’t tell us the make and model of
your Minidisc device, but you said it is both a player and recorder, so this
should be possible. As your hi-fi lacks a line-out socket, you’ll need to
connect a cable from the 3.5mm headphone socket to the Minidisc’s line-in or
mic socket. Then, just hit the record button on the Minidisc device, and the
play button on your hi-fi. This should work, but the recordings may contain
unwanted ‘noise’. To combat this, experiment with the output (hi-fi) volume
level, starting low and working upwards.
It
is possible to record to MiniDisc via the microphone socket
Will my old drive work with Windows 8?
Question
Previously I used a Sony laptop that ran Windows
Vista, backing up all my data on to a Maxtor OneTouch 4 external hard disk made
by Seagate. I recently purchased a Samsung laptop with Windows 8. My problem is
that I am unable to find backup software to download to my new laptop. Maxtor
products are now seen as legacy kit by Seagate, so information is somewhat
limited. Can you offer a solution or do I have to bite the bullet and buy a new
external hard disk? Or perhaps I should use cloud software such as Dropbox?
Answer
There’s no need to use Dropbox because
Seagate told us that Maxtor OneTouch will work with Windows 8 as a normal hard
disk. However, the OneTouch software is not compatible. The answer, then, is to
connect the drive and then use some other backup software, such as the File History
tool built into Windows 8. This keeps every version of backed-up files, so you
can revert to any earlier version.
File
History is Windows 8’s built-in backup tool which keeps every version of
previously backed-up files
To activate it, launch Control Panel (from
the Start screen start typing ‘control panel’ and then click Control Panel).
Then, under the ‘System and Security’ heading, click ‘Save backup copies of
your files with File History’. Assuming your Maxtor drive is connected, it
should be shown. If the wrong drive is shown, click ‘Select drive’, choose the
correct one, then click OK. Now click ‘Turn on’. File History will start work
right away, backing up all files stored in the Windows Libraries. To exclude
particular folders, click ‘Exclude folders’, then click Add. To tweak how often
backups are made, click Advanced settings’.
To restore files later, use File Explorer
to navigate to the relevant file or folder, then click the History button in
the Home tab. Use the arrows at the bottom of the window to skip backwards and
forwards through time. To restore an item, select it, then click the round
button at the bottom.
