A gaming powerhouse with 3d vision support
is ultimately too niche
Toshiba’s flagship desktop replacement
laptop focuses on gaming grunt but also delivers a great experience for those
who want serious computing power in a mobile form factor.
Toshiba
Qosmio X870
Not that you’d want to spend too much time
carrying the 17.3in laptop around. Not only does it weigh a touch over 3.5kg,
but the power brick comes in at 1kg as well. Given that it only lasted 38
minutes in our heavy use test and 1:29 in the light use test, you’ll want that
power pack with you.
When it comes to gaming, the Qosmio was
second only to the M17x and its Radeon 7970M. Toshiba has opted for Nvidia’s
GeForce GTX 670M, which delivers 42fps in our High detail Crysis test.

One feature that makes the Qosmio stand out
from the rest of the laptops on test is the inclusion of a 120Hz screen, which
when paired with the bundled Nvidia 3D Vision kit allows for 3D gaming and
movie playback. This is still something of a novelty, but it does mean that
underlying hardware is powerful enough to drive such an experience.
While this is a well built, high performer,
it ultimately the plastic chassis doesn’t feel as luxurious as the M17x, and
the novelty nature of 3D Vision isn’t enough to drive our desire for the
laptop.
