Macro | 1/20 sec | f/3.1 | 4.3 mm | ISO 100

Detail is good in the center of the image but they are faded in the corners and edges. When using the lens at its longest, details are still good, but there is clearly some purple fringing and chromatic aberration, but for a camera of this price it can be predicted. The lens has a minimum focusing distance only about 1cm in super-macro mode that allows excellence close-up images.

ISO

The noise is low at ISO 100 and 200, but become blurred at ISO 400. Detail is lost in the darker parts of the image at ISO 800; with many more details are lost in ISO 1600. Images are very noisy at ISO 3200 and 6400, with image size limited to 4MP.

AWB preset - fluorescent lights

AWB handles fluorescent lights white good, with an almost identical shot taken when using the incandescent preset. Under the fluorescent lights, the AWB works well, with color casts in each of the images taken using the three fluorescent presets.

Panorama | 1/180 sec | f/8.0 | 4.3 mm | ISO 64

Panorama | 1/180 sec | f/8.0 | 4.3 mm | ISO 64

Panorama has a good amount of details and the camera does a good job of stitching them together.

The S4800 does not come with many creative filters to use when shooting, but there are color modes, as example above.

Value for money

The Fujifilm FinePix costs about $210, making it one of the cheapest ultra-zoom cameras available. There are two other options with 30x zoom, both from Sony, the Cybershot HX50 at $ 500 and the HX200V at $390. The HX50 is a pocket-able camera whereas the HX200V is a bridge camera, like the S4800. With 35x optical zoom there is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ30 at $258, 40x zoom there is the Olympus SP-820UZ at $281 and Fujifilm FinePix S8200 at$289, 42x zoom there is the Nikon Coolpix P520 at $454 and Fujifilm FinePix HS50 at $589, 46x zoom the Fujifilm FinePix S8500 at $379 and lastly with 50x optical zoom are the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS at $539, Sony Cybershot DSC-HX300 at $581 and Fujifilm FinePix SL1000 at $421.

You also need to buy a memory card and a case or bag to keep your camera safe and protected - take a look through our full guide of camera bags.

Conclusion

The Fujifilm FinePix S4800 will appeal to those who have a limited budget, but want a versatile camera with large zoom and manual controls. It is ideal for those who want to test their photographic capabilities without investing a DSLR. Good battery life and image quality match the price. What you do not have is a handy viewfinder for a camera with so much zoom and continuous shooting speed is pretty slow. Overall, the S4800 offers a lot compared to its price.
