The exposure is reliable when the camera keeps producing bright saturated images with many decent details. The color is excellent and flash performance is quite stable with the good harmony between the subject and background detail, giving a decent look result, although the flash light is a little soft.

Compared to the X10, the detail level has been improved as suggested. As long as the ISO is kept at low level, when the X10 shows moire in fine details, the X20’s details do not contain any moire. Dynamic range is good, and the camera provides some ways to extend the captured details, with the options up to 400% DR. The excellent macro performance of the camera allows you to focus subjects within the 1cm close from the front of the lens, giving exceptional result. Purple fringing and chromatic aberrations are not significant. Very little distortions are visible.

ISO noise performance

Photos with different ISO levels

The ISO noise is good when the ISO is set at the lowest point at 100, and details are also good until the ISO reaches 800 with the loss of some beautiful details. The noise becomes significant at ISO 3200. Images at ISO6400 and ISO 12800 cannot be resized as they are set on the previous mode. However, the noise level is quite high so that these settings should be avoided.

White balance

The auto white balance performs very well under tungsten lightning and produces warm shots. With the support of the tungsten preset, this performance is even better. AWB is also very stable under the fluorescent light and the images have a color cast as the effect of the fluorescent preset.

Pano 360 | 1/420 sec | f/7.1 | 7.1 mm | ISO 100

The panoramic mode built in this device stitches the images when you hold the shutter release button and sweep the camera around. The result photo is good and it is possible to shoot at the angle of 120, 180 and 360 degree.

A great deal of film simulation modes, dynamic range options (100% - 400%) as well as effects is provided, including Toy camera, Miniature, pro low-light mode, pro-focus mode, multiple exposures, and more. Some bracketing options are also available, including the DR and Film Stimulation bracketing as well as ISO bracketing. The built in RAW processing can be used in playback mode, although it is not saved or available like an options with some modes like on other scene modes.

The video performance is very impressive, recording full HD video at 60 fps, producing smooth results, although it might be difficult to use the zoom ring smoothly as it is manually controlled. It is also possible to plug an optional stereo microphone via the multiUSB port.

Value

The Fujifilm X20 is on its way to compete with many rivals while almost all manufacturers have one or even two senior compact camera models on the market. Owning a hot-shoe flash light like the X20, following are some of the nearest competitors:

·         Olympus XZ-2 - f/1.8-f/2.5, 4x optical zoom lens, optional EVF available, $523.5

·         Canon Powershot G15 – f/1.8-f/2.8, 5x optical zoom lens, optical viewfinder, $622.5

·         Nikon Coolpix P7700 – f/2.0-f/4.0, 7.1x optical zoom lens, vari-angle screen, $487.5

·         Panasonic Lumix LX7 – f/1.4-f/2.3, 3.8x optical zoom lens, optional EVF available, $487.5

·         Samsung EX2F – f/1.4-f/2.7, 3.3x optical zoom lens, vari-angle tilting screen, Wi-Fi, $298.5

Conclusion

It is somehow hard to distinguish the Fujifilm X20 and X10 model from their outlooks, but all the technologies inside have been considerably upgraded, replaced and re-worked so it provides better than ever images and continuously improves shooting speed. You will get sharp and detailed shots with bright saturated colors which is typical of Fujifilm, as well as good noise performance.

Besides, just like the X10 model, this X20 model comes with a high RRP of $748.5, although it is not as expensive as that of the X10 when it was first introduced. This is somehow explained by the unique built quality and the camera’s design as well as the fact that it is one of the very few compact cameras which have a built in optical viewfinder. This price level is such an investment as it is higher than some mirror less and digital SLRs. Although we found nothing to complain with the built quality, we still feel that is would be better if there is a 2-year warranty.

The high-quality images, unique handling and features as well as an optical viewfinder all are packed in a stylish camera, with full manual controls, raw shooting and flash hot-shoe. If you are looking for such of these features and do not mind to make an investment, the Fujifilm X20 is really such a good choice.
