Seasonic SS-300TGW

This PSU is designed in the TFX12V form-factor (Thin Form Factor with 12V connection),  which is optimized for computer cases 9 to 15 liters large. That's not the smallest but quite widespread, type of compact computer case.

Compared with above mentioned PSUs, this form factor is larger, which allow to reduce the desity of components or boost the output power. Besides, Seasonic SS-300TGW has a 80mm fan which is more efficient and less noisy than the high-speed 40mm buzzers.

The exterior design

Seasonic SS-300TGW has a perfect original appearance for its class. It has no unusual features like detachable cables or additional vent holes.

Circuit design

Be designed in a rather roomy form-factor

Be designed in a rather roomy form-factor

Although this PSU is designed in a rather roomy form-factor, we can see the same platform inside as in the above-discussed Mini 1U products. The only exception is the cable can not be separated. Therefore Seasonic has an efficient platform with suitable energy parameters for compact computers and use it in the PSU of different form-factors without much change.

Due to the roomy case, the filtering components near the mains connector are not as close to each other as in the previous products.

Have a closer look at the compact platform

The thing that's important for our particular purposes is, the larger case helped us dismantle the PSU to have a closer look at the compact platform. We can not do that with Mini 1U products because we can not touch a couple of attached screws.

And now we can test the controller chip. It is the half-bridge resonant LLC converter Infineon ICE2HS01G. 3PCS01 PFC controller, which you can find nearby, is also produced by Infineon.

Paired with a redundant Infineon ICE2QR4765 controller (the same as we can see in the SS-300M1U and SS-350M1U), we have the same set of controls as in the ATX PSU G Gold-certified series from Seasonic.

Like the junior model in the above-discussed pair, the Seasonic SS-300TGW has Rubycon and United Chemi-Con capacitors at the output.

Cable and connectors

The Seasonic SS-300TGW is equipped with the following cables and connectors:

·         One mainboard cable with a 20+4-pin connector (30cm)

·         One CPU cable with a 4-pin connector (40cm)

·         One cable with a PATA power connector and a floppy-drive plug (35+15 cm)

·         One cable with a SATA power connector (30 cm)

·         One cable with two SATA power connectors (+20 cm)

Oddly enough, this larger PSU has fewer cables and connectors than its Mini 1U counterpart that has the same wattage rating. To be exact, the SS-300TGW lack one PATA and one SATA power connector which appeared in the SS-300M1U.

Considering that the compact computer case can handle more than three drives (including an optical drive), we can not accept a reduction of the number of available power connectors.

Specification

·         Total power: 300W

·         Input frequency: 47/63 Hz

·         Output: +3.3V @ 10A, +5V @ 14A, +12V @ 25A, -12V @ 0.3A, +5Vsb @ 2A

·         The launch, cold start: 100A maximum

·         Efficiency: >87%

·         Power Factor Correction: Active PFC, 99% typical

·         Safety: CUL, TUV, CB

·         EMC: CE, FCC, C-tick

·         Connectors: 1x 20/24pin Main Power connector; 1x 4pin ATX 12V connector; SATA , HDD, FDD

·         Dimensions (WxLxH): 3.3x6.9x2.5 inches / 85.0x175.0x63.5 mm

Seasonic SS-300TGW has the same specs as the SS-300M1U has, which is not surprising because both have the same platform and power.

It is also 80 PLUS Gold compliant.

Compatible UPS

Working together with APC SmartUPS SC 620, this PSU is stable at loads up to 300W when powered by the mains but could switch to the PSU's battery at loads of no more than 285W.

Cross-Load Voltage Stability

Each of their voltage remains within 3% of the requirements.

Each of their voltage remains within 3% of the requirements.

Seasonic SS-300TGW doesn't succeed in this test compared to the previous model with the same platform, but nonetheless each of its voltage remains within 3% of the required levels.

Output Voltage Ripple

The output voltage ripple is almost the same as with the SS-300M1U.

The output voltage ripple is almost the same as with the SS-300M1U.

The output voltage ripple is almost the same as with the SS-300M1U. It is only more or less strong on the +12V rail and always remains far within the permissible limits.

Temperature and noise

Being cooled by a 80x80x15mm ADDA AD0812MB-D90 fan

Seasonic SS-300TGW is cooled by a 80x80x15mm ADDA AD0812MB-D90 which has a rated speed at 3500 RPM.

This model does not prevent us from measuring its fan's speed.

This model does not prevent us from measuring its fan's speed.

As opposed to the previous model, this model does not prevent us from measuring its fan's speed.

Fan is actually idle until a load of 120W.  After that, it would turn on for brief periods of time which eventually got longer and longer as the PSU load grew. Fan continuously operates at loads of 50% and higher. During continuous operation, the fan speed increases steadily from 650 RPM to 1600 RPM. A 120x120x25mm fan will have unpleasant loud noise at high speed but the low-profile 80mm fan doesn't make any noise.

The Seasonic SS-300TGW is very quiet throughout the entire load range, being preferable to the same-wattage SS-300M1U whose fan is downright loud at full load.

Efficiency and power factor

It achieved 80 PLUS Gold requirements.

It achieved 80 PLUS Gold requirements.

Seasonic SS-300M1TGW was 88.1%, 91.9% and 91.6% efficient at reference loads 20%, 50% and 100%, respectively. Therefore, it achieved 80 PLUS Gold requirements. The peak efficiency of 92.3% was observed at a load of 101W.

The power factor was 99.4% at full load.
