It has long-term warranty, but slow performance and is an expensive hard disc.

When you are paying for a 1TB hard drive, you should want the best. Unfortunately, Hitachi’s Ultrastar A7K2000 does not have a good starting point, since it uses the old SATA2 interface instead of a modern SATA3.

Not surprisingly, as for an old SATA2 hard drive; the A7K2000 did not seem to be very fast in our read/write speed tests. In large file tests, it achieved the write speed of 93.2MB/s and the read speed of 135.7MB/s, which is slightly better. Actually, the read speed is quite comparable to that of some other SATA3 models, but the slow write speed performance causes the average write speed for large files to drop to 114.4MB/s.

The performance in the small file transfer tests was slower, due to the more difficult nature of the test. The A7K2000’s write speed for small files was actually faster than that of some SATA3 drives with 49.4MB/s, but the read speed is only 47.7MB/s, which generates an average speed of 48.6MB/s.

The price is the biggest problem for tis hard drive, as 8p per gigabyte is not enough to compete. Given that this hard drive uses an old technology, that price is too hard to justify, even if it includes a five-year warranty. Samsung’s 1TB Spinpoint F3 is faster and has better values.

Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 4TB – Perfect Disk with Much Space

It’s fast, large and of great value, which makes it the perfect disc if you need much space.

Hitachi's storage department was acquired by Western Digital, but it still remains independent. That's good news because Hitachi’s Deskstar 7K4000 4TB is the best high-capacity hard disc currently.

If you install the disc on the PC, Windows will split it into two NTFS partitions including 2,048 GB and 1,678 GB. If you are running other operating systems, such as Linux, or installing the disc in the NAS, other file systems will be able to handle the entire disc as a single one.

Of course, this SATA3 disc is fast, with the write speed of 149.3MB/s and the read speed of 160.4MB/s in the large file transfer tests, which generated an average speed of 154.8MB/s. While small file transfer performance was not very impressive, at only 32.4MB/s, the read speed for small files is 71.7MB/s, which helps it achieve a total average for small files of 52MB/s.

Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 4TB is one of the fastest hard discs we've ever seen; its small file processing was somewhat inconsistent.

Although the Deskstar 7L4000 4TB outdid in the large file transfer tests, which suggests that it is one of the fastest hard discs we've ever seen, its small file processing was somewhat inconsistent. However, with only 6.5 cents per gigabyte, it can’t be denied that this hard disc is of great value. You also have a five-year warranty, so the Deskstar 7K4000 4TB won a Best Buy award.
