Unveil a mouse quite unlike any other

I think I can honestly say that I've never seen a mouse -indeed a peripheral - quite like the Tt eSports Level 10M gaming mouse. As far as I know it is quite simply unique in the market. And I've seen a lot of gaming mice.

Tt eSports Level 10M Gaming Mouse

What makes it unique? Several things really, but let's start with the experience of receiving one. This is $160 worth of mouse, and even at that price I wouldn't be surprised if the gaming arm of Thermaltake struggles to meet demand. Sure, it looks different, but it's packaged differently, and the silver-sticker-sealed split-door box is something I'd associate with a smartphone or an iPod.

The mouse comes tied down inside, and the manual, product information and software disc come in a chic three-fold silver envelope like something from a VIP party invite.

In a sense, the Level 10M is a VIP product. For one thing, the price is at the level where people will buy one because they can and because...well, it looks cool. But that's not enough, as we all know.

Just as well then that the Level 10M is a whole heap of mouse. Once out of the box, the most striking thing is the weight of the thing. For those who equate quality to heft, you're not going to be disappointed - this device weighs in at 558g and feels valuable. The design is a collaboration between Thermaltake and BMW DesignworksUSA, and you can see where the work has gone. After all, it's not often a mouse body can actually be referred to as a 'chassis'. It implies metal support and a certain solidity not common to even higher-end gaming mice. However, a chassis is precisely what this product has.

The Level 10M comprises of an upper portion that is seemingly made of a solid, rubber-textured reinforced plastic composite, and a lower section that is certifiably strong aluminium, with an aluminium 'brace' running along the top edge. It's certainly different, but it's also lovely to use. It takes some getting used to, but the designers of the Level 10M have clearly considered grip and comfort of the user to the nth degree, even to the point that the mouse width and height can be mechanically tweaked with an included tool to affect '3D axis' ride (the rotational give of the upper), and the placing of an 'Air Through Ventilation System' (12 venting holes on the upper part), which aims to reduce sweat in use.

Other additions include a rubber cover for the USB connector, and a two-compartment drawstring bag for protecting the mouse and its tool on the move. Such dedication to the experience has even gone as far as to cover the sensor underneath so people have to remove it. This is supposed to add to your appreciation of the mouse, but is one step too far for me - I was told the sticker was there and still forgot!

Of course, the software on offer is extensive and will be familiar to many gaming mice users. Five profiles, selectable with one of the mouse side-buttons, scroll, double-click, cursor speed and polling rates are all catered for. So too are seven LED lighting options, macro key functionality and videos enthusiastically explaining features allowing optimal and commendable customization.

Did I like using it? Absolutely, apart from the irritant of the DPI/profile changing button on the left-side, and the associated fear of grip for changing a setting. It's a superb piece of engineering, no doubt, and I'm sure others will be snapping it up, but for essentially $160 I'd want it to be flawless.

Not quite the ultimate mouse, gaming or otherwise. But almost
