Samsung knows how to get the attention of their chosen demographic. It is, in some places, a good thing. Although the technological snob that I am will not let me fully appreciate just how effective pandering to the market is to their bottom line.

Know your customer

One would have to be living within the confines of a deserted island to think that cameras with hinged and rotating screens are new. All the manufacturers have one. The difference is that they take the time to at least pretend that the technology is for taking shots at different angles.

There’s no beating around the bush with the MV900F. It’s all about taking pictures of the owner. Camwhoring is a word that could be used without a trace of irony.

Maybe induce headaches

Design is a very odd word to use here. The screen flips up to block the shutter button. To remedy this, Samsung put a second shutter button on the back of the camera. It isn’t very easy to press. Not to mention that the lash has a bad habit of firing in your face. I would test it more, but I fear for my sight. It is also very light. Samsung have built a point and shoot so compact that it feels almost weightless. There were moments where I forgot it was in my pocket. The weight helps with holding the camera in one hand while coming up with the most ridiculous pose that one can imagine.

Grudging respect

Aside from my disdain for the target market, this is actually not a bad camera. Image reproduction is quite color accurate, if a little dark. Something that’s fine in a well lit room, but not so good if you lack bright fluorescent lights around you. The tiny built-in lash doesn’t help either. In fact, it ends up saturating everything but the image that you want to capture. Something quite odd but still manageable in the end. After all, it’s not like you’re going to be using it for award winning photos.
