Canon PowerShot D20

Super-durable waterproof cameras are perfect for campers, but Canon’s D20 looks like something we have expected to find in a surf shop. It is considered as waterproof to 10m and shockproof to 1.5m, so it is for sure super-durable. We also like the stubby strap that ties around your wrist, and its mechanism of quick release.

Based on its outdoor capabilities, the D20's GPS feature proves to be totally reasonable, and its action here is at top rank. It calculates its location within just some minutes after switching on. An option to keep tracking its location even when switched off means it can tag photos immediately. This will use up quickly the battery if switched on permanently, but it's useful when you go out. Tagging is just several meters away from the real location.

Apart from the GP, the camera's specification is not special at all. The lens has a modest 5x zoom and a f/3.9 maximum aperture which is slightly darker than usual. The 12.1MP sensor has a reasonable balance of detail and noise levels, but it is not the same sensor that did impress us in other Canon’s cameras.

The menus are of standard point-and-shoot style, with a fully automatic mode, plenty of scene presets and a Program mode adding exposure compensation, ISO speed and white balance. There are some creative effects such as Toy Camera and Fish-Eye, but there’s no HDR shooting. The Stitch Assist mode displays the previous shot to arrange photos, but doesn't combine them. However, the video mode is a more advanced step than usual, with lots of detail in its 1080p clips.

The D20's photo testing performance is quite significant. It is fairly fast, which takes 2.2 seconds between each shot and runs at 2fps in continuous mode. Clearly lit photos look brilliant but highlights are often cut off.

The edges of frames often have chromatic aberrations, bringing a faded halo around high contrast lines. Image quality, however, is good in poor light. Noise reduction does harm to nice details, but photos are good enough to be shared online.

This is a camera for people who love outdoors activities rather than the art of photography, but about these aspects it does a great job.
