Another excellent EXR, but the new Wi-Fi functionality is not the best, and not the video either.

Description: Fujifilm's Finepix F770EXR

Fujifilm Finepix F800EXR

We are big fans of Fujifilm's EXR series, but its opponents are catching up for image quality in poor light. Fujifilm Finepix F770EXR couldn’t defeat the total attraction of Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-TZ25. However, the F800EXR looks like a superb ultra-zoom, with features from the F770EXR and a cost of $307 including VAT.

The F800EXR has Wi-Fi and, with the help of the provided free applications for iOS and Android, it can send photos to smartphones and tablets and use these devices' GPS radios to tag photos. Nonetheless, the action is clumsy, requiring lots of finger dances on both the phone and the camera when we updated our location. The F770EXR's built-in GPS proves to be smarter.

Transferring photos from camera to phone seems to be hard, too. The camera creates a Wi-Fi network for the phone to join, but it often stopped waiting and cut off the connection before we could transfer anything. A little effort should usually be compensated.

On the other hand, the F800EXR looks the same as the F770EXR. It has smart shooting modes to reduce noise or expand the dynamic range in order to get better highlight and shadow detail. Priority and manual exposure modes are included, but there’s no manual focus, and it's impossible to move the autofocus point. There are two function buttons to quickly access the key settings, but specific key settings like white balance and Raw mode are only available in the main menu.

Generally, performance is really excellent, with just 1.2 seconds between each photo and a 6fps continuous mode. It gets reduced to 1fps after six photos, but decreasing the resolution to eight megapixels allows us to shoot at 5fps for 14 photos. Unfortunately, its video quality doesn’t meet the standard of the best pocket ultra-zooms.

Generally, performance is really excellent.

The F800EXR goes behind in the footsteps of the powerful F770EXR, using the same sensor and lens. All the others about the F800EXR's image quality are outstanding, from its abundant color output to its low noise in poorly lit scenes.

We're still fans of Fujifilm's EXR cameras, and the F660EXR is good at $236. The F800EXR's new Wi-Fi functionality is pleasant, but it’s not good at all that video quality isn’t any better.
