MS Internet Explorer

Microsoft has hidden many tools for its browser in the Windows registry. For example, you can start Explorer automatically in full-screen mode and download more files simultaneously than seems possible.

Internet Explorer is anchored deep in the system: so deep, that it writes its settings directly into the Windows registry. For editing the registry, type 'regedit' in the text field of the Start menu and press [Enter], In the Registry editor, you can navigate through the Windows Explorer-like tree structure of sub-keys. However, you have to save the registry settings before they can be put into effect. To back up a key before modifying it, directly export the key from Regedit. This will create a small backup file, which you can simply double-click at any time to roll back to the earlier settings.

Starting in Full Screen Mode

[-] Internet Explorer

[-] Main

VALUE: FullScreen = yes

Internet Explorer can use the entire screen for its window. To activate the 'Full Screen Mode', press the [F11 ] key. Unfortunately, this practical setting cannot be saved as a default mode—at least not directly through the regular channels. But it is absolutely possible to do this through the Windows registry. Navigate to the key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet ExpIorer\Main' and double click on the right side of the window on the entry 'FullScreen'.

In the dialog box, set the value to 'yes'. After confirming with 'OK', the browser will from then on start in the full screen mode.

More Downloads At The Same Time

[+]HKEY_Current User

[-] Software

[-] Microsoft

[-] Windows

[-] CurrentVersion

[-] Internet Settings

VALUE: MaxConnectionsPerServer = 4

As a standard setting, Internet Explorer allows only two parallel downloads from a website. You can change this in the key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings':

Right click on 'Internet Settings' and enter a new 'DWORD (32-Bit)'-value with the name 'MaxConnectionsPerServer' with the value '4'. In the same manner, you can then also create the entry 'MaxConnectionsPerServer' and type in '6' as the value. To roll back to the earlier settings, just remove both the keys again.

Use More Popular Sites

[+] HKEY_Current_User

[-] TabbedBrowsing

[-] NewTabPage

VALUE: NumRow = 4

After opening a new tab, Explorer shows a selection of sites you visit often. If the eight choices are not enough for you, you can add more links. In the registry editor, navigate to the key 'FIKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\lnternetExplorer\TabbedBrowsing\NewTabPage'. Now look at the right side of the page if the entry 'NumRows' can be seen. If yes, double click on it. If it is not available, then you have to create it. For this, right click on the 'NewTabPage' and select 'New' and 'DWORD-Value (32 Bit)' in the context menu. Enter 'NumRows' as the name and click on 'OK'. This value will double the number of pages in the preview.

Show Menu Bar Always

[+] HKEY_Current_User

[-] Software

[-] Policies

[-] Microsoft

[-] Internet Explorer

[-] Main

VALUE: AlwaysShowMenus = 1

Internet Explorer displays the menu bar only when you press the [Alt] key. That gets irritating if want to constantly access the settings there. By tinkering a bit in the registry you can make the program display the menu bar at all times. For this, change in the directory list of the editor to the path 'HKEY_CURRENT_ USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft' and right click on 'Microsoft'. In the context menu, select 'New' and 'Key'. This time, type the name as 'Main'. In the same way, put an entry 'AlwaysShowMenus' through 'New DWORD-Value (32 Bit)' under 'Main'. Double click on it and enter the value as '1'. Now, when you restart Internet Explorer and press the [Alt] key, the menu will be visible at all times. For rolling back to the earlier settings, set the value of 'AlwaysShowMenus' back to 'O'.
