Camera

Lynx has the 2MP front camera capable of recording video in 1080p. While you’re ready for the conference calls, there’s no camera on the back for regular shooting. We’re not a big fan of the tablet camera, but it’s an unusual shortcoming based on the fact that most of the tablets consist of both front and rear camera. About image quality on the 2MP camera, the result is almost on par with other tablets: colors seem to pre précis, though not very bright, and the images don’t show the noticeable pixel break. Using video mode for anything apart from video chat will be inconvenient, but if you want to record some of the full HD footage and are clever enough to use the camera without looking, you can wait for the smooth footage with accurate colors.

Software and warranty

We have to compliment Lenovo for subduing in packing the software on Lynx. The tablet is preloaded with several apps and utilities, none of which hinder you when you don;t want to use them: Encyclopaedia Britannica, Evernote Touch, Fresh Paint, the trial version of Nitro Pro 7 PDF maker, Merriam-Webster dictionary and rara.com music service, there’s also a shortcut for Lenovo Cloud Storage of SugarSync, which reminds you of registering the free or paid account – and that’s an exclusive software. Finally, you will find a shortcut for Norton Studio, which also requires you to log in.

Lenovo includes 1-year standard warranty with Lynx, and it warrants the shortcomings of the maker, not the accidental damage. 2-year warranty is available at 59 USD.

Configuration options and competitors

There’s only 1 configuration of Lynx: the 549-USD version with 1.8GHz Atom processor, 2GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Keyboard dock is available at 199 USD, bringing back a total of 748 USD. In some aspect, Lynx is one of the most minimized Windows 8 tablets we’ve ever seen, with 1 model and 1 optional component, in contrast to the productivity-increasing dock, keyboard cover and the additional-storage options. Let’s review the playground.

About the bang-for-the-buck tablets, Asus ViVoTab Smart stays on top among the Windows 8 tablets powered by Atom. With 499 USD, you have 64GB of capacity and good, lightweight design (1.28 pound). The optional keyboard, packed with a 130USD cover, is also comfortable and portable. Battery life reaches 7 hours and a half, not long, but not too bad. Also starting at 499 USD, Dell Latitude 10 provides long battery life and the business features such as TPM. However, to actually decorate Latitude 10 as a productive tablet, you will need to spend an extra of hundreds bucks for the productivity-increasing dock and keyboard. Acer Iconia W510, at 550 USD and up, is not bad. With optional keyboard dock, you can wait for more than 14 hours of battery use, though the typing experience is cramped.

If you can pay more, ThinkPad Tablet 2 of Lenovo is a more promising choice than Lynx – and most of the other tablets based on Atom. At 579 USD and up, you will have a stable tablet with more than 10 hours of battery life, and the options such as keyboard and stylus support make the compromise become sweeter for business users. You will have to withstand the slightly 10.1inch screen, but we think it worth.

Conclusion

The Lynx (bobcat) nickname sound aggressive, but the latest IdeaTab of Lenovo is not. It’s a trustworthy tablet with bright IPS screen, and affordable price, but Lynx is not the best-designed hybrid tablet that runs the longest and is the most feature-rich. So, you don’t need to kook anywhere farther outside the cockpit of Lenovo: long battery life and comfortable keyboard of ThinkPad Tablet 2 turn it into our most favorite tablet at present.
