With a smaller battery, but the screen is smaller (less pixels), we are looking forward to seeing how the Lumia 820 managed to cope with the tests of WPBench processor. We are currently using the test applications that are not calibrated for Windows Phone 8 just yet, so we suggest that you look at these figures with your skepticism. Battery life is slightly shorter on rival Windows Phone 8 devices; probably due to the smaller 1650mAh battery. At least users have the option to carry a spare battery. However, the smaller screen meant that we recorded a longer battery life compared to the rivals during the process of typical use. For more than one day, we were not worried about the charging, and when necessary, the ability of wireless charging was there. Like the Lumia 920, charging on the pad was not as fast as USB charging solution, but at least the future is going to appear here, slowly.

There is not much for us to be surprised, the results of our test corresponded with the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X (all three phones run on the same dual-core Snapdragon S4). SunSpider test results continued the trend of Windows Phone with the scores of less than 1000ms, while AnTuTu’s results were on par with the other Windows Phone devices we've seen so far. Packing the same processing power as the two leading Windows Phones, the Lumia 820 proved to be very fast, with websites, games, and video transmitting applications that were loaded quickly and had no problems. Mapping applications (granted power by Nokia data) quickly discovered our position and drew a roadmap to where we were searching- and we make sure that the A-GPS and GLONASS supports do not cause any damages.

The quality was spoilt by the screen resolution when playing back video, which will not give you anything in 720p; although the audio playback was certainly quite important. At least the current applications (designed for the same 800x480 screens) did not seem out of tune.

Call quality was reliable as ever from Nokia, with two "distortion-free wide amplitude" mics that take care of audio quality on calls and video capture. In our model, we found that the average download speeds were about 6Mbps on HSPA, while upload speeds were generally less than 1Mbps on our O2 UK SIM.

Conclusion

If you have still concerned with joining the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem, the Lumia 820 is a hard item to sell. While the off-contract price is significantly cheaper than the 920, the price difference is so small that we cannot recommend it. The screen is spoilt by a resolution of the last generation and the camera (while not unattractive) does not put up the advanced technical skills of the 920.

The disappointing screen

The disappointing screen

The screen is smaller than the Lumia 920, but the hardware does not feel much lighter. In terms of its strength, a replaceable battery is for the savvy users and the inclusion of microSD storage. Nokia’s trend of eye-catching color schemes will help these phones stand out from the hardware designs that are more secure and the inclusion of the free wireless charging panel and housing is an additional welcome. But we would prefer to pay more to get the Lumia 920.
