In the second part of the 120mm fan discussion, we would like to talk about 27 models from 15 different manufacturers with the rotation speeds of 1,350RPM and higher.

In the second part of the 120mm fan discussion, we would like to talk about 27 models from 15 different manufacturers around the world. These models feature the speeds of 1,350RPM and higher. We are discussing products that have bearable noise as well as hi-speed monsters which may blow up everything. Now, let’s check them out in alphabet order.

Test products

Cooler Master Turbine Master MACH1.8 (R4-TMBB-18FK-R0)

Cooler Master Turbine Master MACH1.8 appears with a wavy box in which there’s a paper.

The box

The box

The fan’s technical specs and key features are listed in the back of the paper. On top lies a plastic cap for the fan’s motor, 4 silicone pins, 1 PATA power adapter, silicone spacers and 4 self-tipping screws.

The accessories

The accessories

The fan is made in China, priced at $16 plus 1-year warranty. It weighs only 110g. Turbine Master MACH1.8 doesn’t look common due to its semi-frameless impeller incorporating 16 blades.

The fan

The fan

With such impeller and frame, the fan has some advantages in term of air flow in comparison with classic 120mm fans because it can get extra air in from the blades’ sides. Cooler Master will talk about this concern in the next part:

The semi-frameless impeller

The semi-frameless impeller

With 16 blades, the impeller enables Cooler Master to acclaim an airflow of 80.3CFM at a speed of 1,800RPM (compared to, for example, 62.7FM at 2,350RPM of Corsair’s 120mm fan).

The fan impeller’s diameter is just 111mm while its motor’s diameter is 40mm. The static pressure is measured at 1.96mm of water. The noise level is 30.5dBA.

The key electrical specs are printed on stickers.

The fan’s barometric ball bearing has a life cycle of 100,000h (or more than 10 years for unstopped operation). The impeller is detachable for cleaning or checking the internal motor:

The structure

The Turbine Master MACH1.8 has higher power consumption than a typical fan of the same series: 0.5A and 4.6W. According to our measurement, it consumes under 3.4W yet that's very high anyway. It has a 3-wire cable which is around 0.5m long.

Corsair AF120 Performance Edition Twin Pack

The Corsair AF120 Performance Edition continues appearing with the splendid coat of the Corsair fans. Inside, the dual packaging includes two similar fans:

The packaging

The packaging

The packaging is very careful, indicating the product’s name, rotation speed, noise level and other parameters along with key features.

The fans are accompanied with a brief user guide, an advertising booklet, two colored rings which can exchanged for each other, screws, and a cable with step-down resistor.

The accessories

The accessories

Made in China, the product is priced $29.95 for a dual-fan kit. The fan is also available individually for $17. This includes the 2-year warranty provided for all Corsair fans.

We may recall you that Corsair’s AF product-line is specially developed for computer case, featuring an impeller with nine identical flat narrow blades.

The diameters of impeller and motor are 112mm and 43mm respectively. The frame’s interior is flat.

The rated speed of The Performance Edition is 1,650RPM but you can turn it down to 1,100RPM by using of the accompanied resistor cable. At the maximum speed, the fan releases an air flow of 63.5CFM, static pressure of 1.1mm of water and 30dBA of noise. The silicone attached into the corners of the frame are to reduce shaking and noise.

Similar to all Corsair models, the AF120 Performance Edition didn’t offer a life cycle. Its sticker indicates the manufacturer, voltage, electric current and country of origin.

Power specs

Power specs

At 0.33A voltage, the fan is alleged to eat below 3.96W of power. The startup voltage is set at 7V and the cable is 300mm long. The fan’s weight is 145g.

Corsair SP120 High Performance Edition Twin Pack

The following is another hi-speed fan from Corsair. The SP120 High Performance Edition is boxed as similarly as the above is.

The packaging

The packaging

The packaging design didn’t change but the color scheme did, it is blue instead of red, while the accessories are the same.

The accessories

The accessories

RRP is $29.95 for a two-piece pack or $17 for only one fan. The product is made in China, offering a 2-year warranty.

Seven large blades of the impeller differentiates this model completely from the rest of the fans participating in the test.

The product’s picture

The product’s picture

As you can see from our last review, the SP120 is designated for high static pressure, meaning it is equipped with blades which are large and almost flat, plus such thick ends.

The fan viewed from a tilt angle

The impeller’s diameter is 112mm, similar to that of the previous fan, but the motor’s diameter is 4mm larger (47mm). At 2,350RPM the SP120 is weaker than the AF120, regarding airflow (62.7CFM) but its static pressure is almost 3 times as high (3.1mm of water).

Meanwhile, The SP120 High Performance Edition has lower power consumption: 0.25A and 3W.

The startup voltage is 7V and the 3-wire cable’s length is 300mm.
