With approximately a kilogram of aluminum and copper, SilverStone designed a new cooler, which operates with an overclocked six-core processor without using any fans. Let’s take a look at SilverStone HE02.

With approximately a kilogram of aluminum and copper, SilverStone designed a new cooler, which operates with an overclocked six-core processor without using any fans. Let’s take a look at SilverStone HE02.

There is nothing new about the idea of cooling a CPU with low noise levels or even without any noise. Many major brands have been making quietly cooling solutions. Scythe Co. of Japan has two giant Orochi and Susanoo. Regarding the Thermalright brand, we can see a very popular product HR-02 as well as a very successful product Macho. Cooler Master, in its field, launched the Hyper Z600D while Noctua's leading ship has its flagship NH-D14 and a few other models, all of which operate in the passive mode. Zalman, Thermaltake, and Titan seem to be the only brands trying to develop these passive cooling devices.

And today, we get a new product of this type. It appears with the name of SilverStone Heligon HE02 (STT-HE02).

Packaging and accessories

SilverStone’s cardboard box is similar to that of Thermalright’s products but its two sides are dark brown.

Moreover, this packaging is very helpful and full of information, including the data in all aspects of the cooler printed on the sides.

It also looks very solid because the cooler is put in the pieces of foam rubber, while the accessories are packed in a separate box.

The accessories include a common stand, the coupling bars, two steel supports, four wire brackets to fasten the fans, manuals, screws and spacers with silver linings and thermal grease:

Thus, we have everything we need to quickly install the Heligon HE02 into any modern platform. Like all current computer components in the world, this cooler is manufactured in China. It costs about $65 and has one-year warranty.

Design and functionality

First, we must bear in mind that SilverStone Heligon HE02 is a large heat sink for large CPUs. It is 170 mm wide, 130 mm high and 160 mm thick. The huge size of this cooler has a very complex shape:

Despite the large size, this cooler only weighs 990 grams as mentioned in the technical standards (and 971 grams according to our digital scale). This number is not bigger than the current CPU coolers. We have never seen any heavier cooler.

The radiator is placed on the six heat pipes, with a diameter of 6 mm. These pipes will carry the aluminum fins with a thickness of 0.5 mm and the distance between them is 3.5 mm.

The increase in the distance between the aluminum fins are seen in all fanless coolers because it helps move heat effectively due to the natural convection.

That is also the reason why the aluminum fins are unusually sharp like that.

We also want to note how the heat pipes go through the aluminum heat sink fins. SilverStone's engineers decided to put the hottest heat pipes out to the farthest to improve the performance of the cooler.

To improve further, these pipes are fastened to the heat sink fins as well as to the base of the device:

The nickel-plated copper base is at least 2 mm thick below the pipes.

The 42x38 mm contact surface is not perfect but quite smooth to touch.

In contrast to the Thermalright’s heat sinks, the SilverStone Heligon HE02 model has a concave base.

We are very pleased with the thermal grease on this cooler, as it leaves on the LGA2011 CPU a heat sink layer with convex surface. We have never seen such a perfect picture before:

Hopefully, it also means that there is an effective passive cooler. Let’s check it to see.
