Actually the name says all.

Description: Slim Portable

Slim Portable

We have seen some SSD drives that are very compact in recent months. But we must recognize that this is the first time that we have met a normal hard disk drive that is as thin and light as Slim Portable of Seagate.

This 500GB model has size with only 9x125x74 mm and its weight is 160 grams, so you can put it in your bag and you don’t nearly feel it. There is a Mac version of drive that is formatted in HFS+ file of Mac and it has USB 2.0 configuration, but we checked USB 3.0 model. This model is formatted like a Windows NTFS drive.

Seagate doesn’t forget Mac user. There is a benefit on disk drive that can format drive again to use with Mac and it also provides option to set up NTFS driver for Mac. Therefore, you can use it without formatting again. This thing will allow you to use drive with Mac and PC – this thing is impossible if you format it like HFS+ drive that is used for Mac.

The only thing we complain is Slim Portable isn’t the fastest USB 3.0 drive that we have seen recently. It took about 80 seconds to back up our group of 5GB testing files while it took 60 seconds in average to some other USB 3.0 models that we have tested recently. Yet, it is compared with FireWire 800 drive and it is faster than standard USB 2.0 drive.

Advice for shopping

Maybe it isn’t the fastest and cheapest USB 3.0 at present; however, it’s difficult to defeat the ultra-thin and light design of Seagate Slim Portable drive if you need a mobile real drive to use with Macbook.
