100D has the same 18megapixel APS-C Hybrid-AF CMOS sensor as 700D, with pixel phase detection on the sensor to improve actual view focus, as well as focus while recording video. Hybrid CMOS AF II covers 80% of shooting area, giving improved AF and speed tracking while watching live or recording.

The back has a 3inch sensor, with 1040k res, can be used to for menu browsing and setting up as well as used as a way to set up the focus point.

Shooting modes consists of Auto, Intelligent Auto, and well as complete manual shooting, together with the new Candle-Light, Food and Kids modes. It can shoot creative effect with previewing the effect before shooting, and the fresh news to EOS 100D is the ability to record 2 image versions, one with applied effect and one without, both are JPEG file, so new users don’t need to have resource to the RAW file if they don’t like that effect, or accidentally let the effect open.

Canon EOS 100D is visibly smaller than other Digital SLRa, and has a big rubberized gripping that also surrounds the shutter release button to make sure that it can hold on to the camera well. We discover that the gripping is pretty deep, and combines with the new 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, the camera doesn’t feel too small in the palm.

Canon EOS 100D weigh inly 370g (battery and memory card is not included), and has the dimensions of 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm which manifest an incredibly compact body with a Digital SLR having optical viewfinder. Smaller than Pentax K-30 and Sony Alpha A37, both of which are considered compact.

The Q button on the back delivers a control panel on the back screen, which can be used with the touch screen, making changing settings fast and easy without having to get to the menu of the camera. The good number of buttons and controls can be found on the back and on top of the camera, including a dedicated ISO button close to the shutter button, as well as a dial command used to set up the shutter and/or aperture. Unfortunately, the 4-D controller doesn’t have the feature to move leftwards/rightwards/upwards/downwards, and simply used to move in the menu. However, the Q button and the touch screen works well when using.

There’re 9 focusing points, with a cross point at the center, and the image info is displayed clearly in the viewfinder. Hybrid AF on the sensor provides 80% coverage, though it’s only activated when watching live or in video recording mode, and direct focus doesn’t reach the equivalent speed and standard of the performance you hand from the compact and mirror less camera.

Menu is arranged clearly with the zone code color, as well as a “My Menu” screen where you can customize the existing option, making arriving to the options and your favorite settings easier. The screen can be used as a touch shutter button when you use live view as well as used to move in the menu.

Battery efficiency is rated at 300 shots according to the Canon / CIPA test, an average level for a DSLR, 700D offers more. 100D uses a small and new battery to activate the smaller DSLR body.

Extremely fast focusing speed

Extremely fast focusing speed

We take lots of shots to check the response of the camera, from turning on to the first shot, shot by shoot, focusing speed etc. we take lots of shots then take the average to guarantee the accuracy and consistency of the test, making it easier to compare with other cameras.

·         Shutter response: 0.1

·         Shutter response /focus – wide angle: 0.15 / 0.55 (Live view, Flexzone)

·         Shutter response /focus – max magnification: 0.15 / 0.55 (Live view, Flexzone)

·         Shooting timer: 0.65

·         Shot to Shot with no Flash: 0.4

·         Shot to Shot with Flash: 0.6

·         Continuous Shooting – JPEG (shooting before slowing down): 4fps (31 shots)

·         Continuous Shooting – Flash: 2fps

·         Continuous Shooting – RAW:  4fps (7 shots)

Focusing speed is very fast, and using for live view makes the focusing speed even faster than the prior Canon EOS DSLR. Time to shot each image is very good.
